Overview

The Department of Accountancy is the “oldest” department of the Institute.  The BSBA Accounting program was first offered in 1967 as an off-campus offering of the MSU main campus thus predating the creation of the Institute by one year.  The program was absorbed by the MSU-IIT when the MSU Extension Division was abolished and replaced by the new entity.

The program has gone through several curriculum changes through the years. BSBA Accounting was first offered as a four-year course, then revised into a four-and-a-half –year course and finally into a five –year course when the PICPA-CHED prescribed ladderized curriculum was implemented.  This year, the Board of Regents approved the revised albeit still five-year program that aims to equip the student with more skills and knowledge in order to be a more globally competitive accountant. The new curriculum is no longer ladderized.

To date, the Department has produced 347 CPA’s 9 of whom topped the licensure exam  – 5 in the top 10 and 4 in the top 20.  For the May 2008 CPA Examination, the Professional Regulation Commission cited MSU-IIT as the 2nd top performing school, under the category of schools with 26-50 examinees, with its 43% passing rate against the national passing rate of only 27%. The Institute received a  citation in 1988 as the top performing school in the same category.   

Even though the acknowledged measure of program quality is school performance in the licensure examination, the Department believes that quality is also inferred in the ability of the graduates to find gainful employment within a short period of time after graduation and to later on hold positions of responsibility even sans the license. The Department takes pride in the achievement of such graduates and its CPA’s who are all over the country and the world.
