Overview
Silahis is the official student publication of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.
Silahis: back, again
As early as 1972, MSU-IIT already had a student publication called the “The Vanguard”. The declaration of the Martial Law however triggered the continuous release of the paper. With tensed atmosphere and strict censorship, the earliest staff had to conform to cautious measures that include going to the Philippine Constabulary (then located at Camp Pintoy) to have their paper inspected prior to publication.
The Vanguard gave justice to its name by representing the students’ voices and talents in its pages.
Year 1975 marked the adoption of the name Silahis over the old The Vanguard. The new name was chosen to epitomize how education (in MSU-IIT) sheds knowledge to students in form of “rays”, as what it means in vernacular. In addition, it also happened to be the beginning word of MSU-IIT’s Himno ng Pamantasan.
Along with the gradual modernization, Silahis had gone through a series of developments. From the black and white photos to colored ones, from the simple to stylish mastheads. And the once portable logo had its fixed position. Emerging from the ideas of the successive artistic staffs, some issues were made in magazine formats, which contained even more entertaining sections.
Silahis, like any organization, suffered conflicts within its circle. Due to an “internal strife” and “irresponsible journalism” the controversial January-February 2001 issue was banned from circulation. It re-operated five semesters after, on 2003, and continued until 2005, after which, again, Silahis vanished in thin air.
At present Silahis is composed of 10 student writers. With the advisorship of Miss Mara Barbra Nanaman, the staff hopes to regain the publication’s earned prestige and honor by rendering the best that we could.
Needless to say, all visions we set remain fancies without the support that come in contributions of this university’s constituents, including of course, our fellow students.
